What are your main academic/policy areas of interest and what led you to those interests?
My areas of concentration are in Nonprofit Management and Policy Analysis. I want to pursue a career in university administration, hopefully at IU Bloomington someday soon. I love being of service to others and previously, being a classroom teacher was one way of doing that. As a curious person, problem solver and life-long learner I thrive in academic environments and enjoy participating in academic communities, in ways that are beneficial and personally meaningful.
Describe your role and experience as SPEA Connect’s representative to the SPEA Graduate Student Association (GSA).
As the SPEA Connect representative, my role is to advocate for my SPEA Connect peers from around the world within SPEA, and to help facilitate connections between in-residence SPEA students and their SPEA Connect peers. With the support of my colleagues in SPEA GSA, I am exploring several areas in which this may be accomplished:
- Market directly to SPEA Connect students, encouraging them to participate in programs such as the Career Networking and Exploration Trips that are already well-attended by in-residence SPEA students, thus bringing the two groups together.
- Develop professional activities between in-residence SPEA graduate students and SPEA Connect students during SPEA Connect Week (which occurs during the summer).
- Include SPEA Connect student profiles on the electronic monitors in the SPEA building to celebrate the value and contributions that SPEA Connect students bring to the SPEA community.
- Explore more about what SPEA Connect Students bring to the in-residence SPEA program. There is significant potential for SPEA Connect ambassadors around the world to connect in-residence SPEA students with internship and job opportunities throughout the world where SPEA Connect students live and work.
Is there anything else you would like prospective students to know about you or your experience in the program?
There seems to be a great deal of mutual respect between professors teaching in the SPEA Connect program and the SPEA Connect students themselves. Students working from the far reaches of the planet, many of whom are deeply imbedded into their careers, bring unique and profoundly relevant experiences to the online classroom environment. With the expertise and dedication of SPEA Connect professors the learning is rich with meaningful relationships formed with each class experience.
